IX. Purpose of life - Does life really have meaning? Amos 8 & 1 Timothy 4 ... Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death --- even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed --- not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence --- continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. 'When I die, I rot,' were the words of a famous historian. I don't know of a more radical denial of everything God has done and continues to do in his world. Unfortunately, without saying the same thing, many people today think that's what life is really about----'It's meaningless,' they say. 'It has no purpose; it make's no sense.' In great contrast, the Christian life is beautiful. It does have purpose and meaning in this life and for the life to come. Why is this so? Because Jesus Christ has come into the world as Savior from sin and Lord of one's life. Then he gives us his example to follow. Here in Philippians we have one of its most beautiful expressions. Simply put, it's the life of a servant. It's the answer to this question: 'What shall I render to the Lord for all his benefits to me; How shall my soul by grace restored, give worthy thanks to you?' ... By serving and obeying God and loving your neighbor as yourself. That's the formula and that's how you discover your way to God's will for your life. HOME
